The Two Fatalities Named in the Providence Campus Shooting as Law Enforcement Press On With Manhunt for Gunman.

Two students who died in Saturday’s violent attack in Providence were being remembered Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their killer continued following the discharge by local law enforcement of the sole person of interest in the case.

Tributes for Ella Cook

The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was described as “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, according to the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a ceremony on Sunday.

She served as vice-president of Brown’s chapter of the campus GOP group, according to the organization. The White House press secretary also expressed sympathies online, stating: “Words cannot express. Keeping in mind her family and friends, above all her mom and dad.”

An International Student

The other person killed was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his first year of studies at the renowned school, according to relatives.

Umurzokov’s identity was verified by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.

“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He had big dreams of entering the field of neurosurgery and helping people,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a online post.

The Shooting Incident

Nine other people were injured in Saturday’s attack in the school of engineering of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the university's examination week.

Authorities said by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-old male taken into custody in a police operation at a hotel about 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was being released.

“A perpetrator remains free,” stated the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

He continued, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you must reassess and pursue a different angle, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last day or so.”

Ongoing Concerns

Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, admitted: “This will probably generate fresh anxiety for our city”.

The assailant opened fire inside a room in the engineering building on Saturday, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a 9mm handgun, a law enforcement official told the media outlet.

Officers that raided the hotel found two handguns and magazines when the suspect was detained, as was reported.

Those Hurt

Among those wounded, one pupil was released from the hospital, said the university president, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in critical but stable condition, and one was in critical condition, authorities stated on Sunday.

An educational institution, a private K-12 school in Durham, North Carolina, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.

Additional Memorials

Tributes were paid to Cook at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only during her upbringing... but at Brown University she was an incredible light in that institution as well.”

A group leader, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the club. “Ella was recognized for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she aided her club and peers,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by Umurzokov’s death in a tribute. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to Mr Umurzokov’s family, companions, and schoolmates and grieve for of his bright future.”
