The Red Devils Set to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
Securing the German international comes at a time when the club seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
