The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

No fewer than 16 people perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were taken to the hospital.

The victims have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the victims who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
