New York's next mayor confirms his intention to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate during his run for office.
A Traditional Abode
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for most New York City mayors from the World War II era.
But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key issue, was not quick to announce this decision promptly after his victory in November.
"This decision came down to keeping my family safe and the need to dedicating my complete efforts on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," stated Mamdani in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district known for its vibrant immigrant populations and culinary diversity.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he noted.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, Astoria will always live a part of me and my work," he added.
Political Debate
Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani tied his central policy – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.
However his rivals, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the apartment despite the fact that he came from a well-known family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his three terms, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a place for civic gatherings, and championed an extensive renovation of the older mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting a stark contrast to his modest Astoria apartment.
Featuring butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Inside, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, meaning the city regulates on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.
Tenants see such units as crucial resources as the cost of housing rises faster than the means of many residents.
Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
