In Such Poor Health I Was Unable to Walk Until a Fellow Passenger Virtually Carried Me to a Restroom.

During my my late teens, my regular journey to work was on an crowded coach. It remained crowded and was consistently without any seats by the time I boarded.

During a certain commute, I was feeling incredibly sick when the coach lurched around each corner. I continuously reassured myself to hold on just a little longer before the bus arrived at my destination, and then I could rush hurriedly to the closest public restroom to be sick.

As we neared the avenue close to my stop and I realised I would not be to hold on. In an instant, it seemed a curtain fell over me. The world became blank and silent; similar to when one cut the sound. I said to myself, “I will lose consciousness”.

Luckily I was close to the driver of the bus, allowing me to take several steps forward and requested that the driver to open the doors, telling him I was going to be sick. He promptly opened the entrance and I hurriedly stepped onto the sidewalk.

I was determined not to vomit in front of a busy multi-lane road, so I forced myself up and endeavored to make my way to the park opposite the street, where I thought I could at least find some privacy behind a bush to be sick. However I apparently lost consciousness. I sensed my limbs, but I couldn’t walk or see clearly, so I began crawling towards my intended destination.

“You right, love?”

At that moment, someone picked me up. I felt an arm around my waist and a man’s voice asked, “Everything alright, love?” I managed to tell the mysterious stranger that I needed to get to a bathroom. Thus, he practically supported my weight into a close-by structure and put me into the female bathroom. He wanted to know if I needed him to remain with me but I said no.

After a short while, I had recovered sufficiently to sit down when from beyond the door came him inquire, “Are you OK, love? Can I get you something?” I was incapable to get up right away but did manage to thank him and shortly thereafter regained the function of my feet. I got myself home and spent the following days getting over what was later diagnosed as a nasty tummy bug.

I never glimpsed his features – only his legs along with a sizable container for tools he had with him – but he saved me, at a moment I was completely helpless.

Many times, life has a way of making you self-protective, pushy, and rivalrous. His was the sort of gesture that undoes that emotional callousness. He demonstrated that people’s natural inclination leans toward compassion, a trait I cherish in other people.
