Refugee Status to Become Temporary

The scheme mirrors the method in Denmark, where asylum seekers get temporary residence documents and must request extensions when they expire.

Authorities states it has begun supporting people to go back to Syria willingly, following the removal of the current administration.

It will now begin considering mandatory repatriation to that country and other nations where people have not regularly been deported to in recent years.

Asylum recipients will also need to be resident in the UK for twenty years before they can apply for permanent residence - up from the existing 60 months.

At the same time, the government will establish a new "employment and education" immigration pathway, and urge asylum recipients to obtain work or begin education in order to switch onto this route and qualify for residency more quickly.
