RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several access tunnels providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," he commented. "Including them were thousands of British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
