The atmosphere at their home stadium was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had let in 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. The Campaign Falling Apart?
Had their campaign unraveling, or did there exist any cohesion keeping it intact in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, but then he admitted that the board had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Speculation that he could resign were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.
Lazio appeared equally disorganized during matches as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to tell if progress is being made or self-destructing.
The Youngster's Unforeseen Return
One individual remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio during this campaign. He completed the last one on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, his parent club were attempting to extend his stay a while longer. The signing restriction forced a rethink. Cancellieri arrived in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."
Finding His Best Role
It's possible the coach was still trying to determine the nature of the player's talent. Originally described as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward.
