Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not just his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
