Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often marked by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about following this endearing family go about their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to evolve comedy past its long-running sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

Future Seasons

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
